Psycho-sexual phobias might be regarded a separate group since they all relate to a specific interaction, that of sexual activity. However, the individual manifestations may or may not be gender specific such as vaginismus or anorgasmia in women, secondary erectile dysfunction or performance anxiety in men.
Sexual Dysfunctions – The fundamental characteristic is that psychological factors affect sexual response leading to distress and interpersonal difficulties.
This may be founded in the relationship which a couple may have or the sexual perceptions of an individual.
There may be physical and/or medical factors involved. In some cases the problem may be a consequence of severe trauma or assault.
Parafilia (Fetishism)- describes the experience of intense sexual arousal to atypical objects, fetishes, situations, fantasies, behaviours, or even individuals.
Only when such matters become personally distressing, intrusive, or uncontrollable are they regarded as an issue of psychological concern. Naturally, they are of concern and importance when they run counter to acceptable social behaviour or the legal system.
